That Adventurous Streak
Posted 05/09 by Ruthie BenDor
Though I’ve been planning this trip since the beginning of this year, I didn’t work up the gumption to tell my folks until mid-February. I feared they’d disapprove, or worse, try to convince me not to go. Man, was I ever wrong.
Turns out there’s an adventurous streak in my family, though we keep it well-hidden. Since announcing my plan to cycle across America, relatives have been sharing their own stories of adventure—a distant aunt who once planned a similar trip, parents who road-tripped across the U.S.A., grandparents who toured South America despite not speaking a word of Spanish or Portuguese. And of course, my parents emigrated to the United States from halfway around the world before I was born; what a leap that must have been!
So I guess I shouldn’t have been that surprised when my mom was enthusiastic from the start - she even (jokingly) asked if she could come, too. My dad was a bit more dubious at first, but after I shared all the planning I’ve been doing, he’s come around to the idea and may even join me for a few days somewhere in the Midwest. My brother’s concise response: “Cool!” I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive family.
PS. My mom is visiting me here in Boston this weekend. We don’t really do the whole Mothers Day thing in my family, but happy Mothers Day anyway, mom!
